Do you shudder at the mere mention of the word “budget”? Break out in cold sweat when someone suggests putting together a spending plan? Wish you could get a handle on your money plan, but feel stuck in the fear of facing all those numbers?
I hear you.
No really! I may be a financial professional, but that doesn’t mean I love budgets and spreadsheets and long to spend cold winter nights cuddled up with a good copy of QuickBooks. Quite the contrary. What I do love about money, however, is the potential it has to support us, to empower us, and to help us make our biggest goals and dreams come true. When you look at money as a tool for achieving and doing what you want in life, it becomes much less scary and much more approachable.Money has the potential to support us, to empower us, and to help us make our biggest goals and dreams come true. Your money is a tool
Money is an inanimate object. In fact, most of the time these days, money isn’t even an object — it’s a concept and a set of digital numbers flying around the world at light speed! But so many of us see money as something menacing, something dark, something scary, unattainable or mysterious.
I think that’s why so many people avoid making any sort of money plan (let’s not use the “B” word anymore!). It’s as though I said, “Here’s this scary monster you’re going to have to fight. Please write out a money plan for how you’re going to slay it and not get eaten in the process. Have fun!”
But, if you’ve been around my blog for any length of time, you know that I believe you can change your money mindset, clear your blocks around money, and start viewing your money as a neutral tool to get where you want to go.
Whether you’re an entrepreneur or simply an individual, you can become an awesome money boss with just a little bit of painless planning.
Now, you might have already gotten yours, but just in case you didn’t know, I’ve put together two perfect planners for becoming a powerful, awesome money boss: one for your personal life and one for your business. Click to download them now!
Whether you’re planning your personal spending or your business spending, the process is very similar:
- Start by looking back. What worked and what didn’t? What old patterns (from your parents, your family, etc.) may be holding you back?
- Then set some goals. P.S. This is NOT a budget! This is a big-picture overview of how you will use money as a tool to move you to where you want to go.
- Finally, make a plan to make it happen. Plot it, plan it, write down the steps, and schedule them in your calendar to make it real.
And that’s it! Not so scary, right?
If you’re ready to get a handle on your money plan in 2019, I highly recommend you download my Awesome Goal Planners — either the personal edition or the business edition (or both!). Make it part of your New Year holiday to take a little time to read the questions, reflect, and fill out the planner. I promise you will enter the new year better prepared and more in control of your money monsters than ever before!
