We’re coming to the end of my series on the chakras and their influence on our money mindset and money issues. If you’d like to revisit the series, you can download the free Root Chakra lesson from Money Boss and learn more about how you can support both sides of your money — both the pragmatic side and the energetic side.
The final chakra is our crown chakra, located just above the crown of the head. It’s your connection to the divine, to spiritual energy, and to wisdom. Imagine a cosmic funnel balanced on your head, and when it’s open and flowing properly, you’re privy to all the wisdom of the universe — and the benefits it can bestow.
Your crown chakra is the center of your universal connectedness. When it comes to money, it’s expressed as an inner confidence that you know you’re going to be OK — no matter what.
People who are balanced all the way up to their crown chakras usually come across as calm, centered people who tend not to worry very much about anything. Because of that, they may be open to receiving opportunities that others would miss.
Your upper limit problem
The problem I most often see manifest as a symptom of a blocked crown chakra is what author Gay Hendricks calls your “upper limit problem.”
You see this all the time with celebrities who have achieved incredible things in one area of their life — but then crash and burn in another. Think 50 Cent going bankrupt, or Ben and Jen getting divorced.
Hendricks calls this an upper limit problem, because our psyche tends to construct a glass ceiling for us. Once we reach a certain level of success in one area of our lives, we actually self-sabotage in another area, because it’s like we can’t quite believe we’re worthy of all that success.
When you’re not quite at the level that you’re keeping up with the Kardashians, this can still manifest in your life. Maybe you’re doing extremely well at work, but your family relationships are suffering. Or, maybe you’re killing it as a speaker, but can’t seem to close a one-on-one sale.
Worry is the culprit
From where I sit behind this fancy financial advisor’s desk (OK, it’s really not that fancy), the biggest contributor to an upper limit problem is worry.
Worry and anxiety cause us to fret about the future, about what we “deserve,” even about keeping what we already have. And that’s what slowly builds up that psychic glass ceiling, making it impossible for us to rise any further.
But here’s the exciting thing: You don’t have to worry.
No, I’m not being philosophical here. You literally don’t have to worry.
Worry is a habit, and if it’s one we practice, it’s also one we can break. People think you’re either a born worrier or not, but it’s a habit that has to be developed. And that means it can be overcome. Start by trying these steps:
- Make a list of everything that’s worrying you about your finances. Put it aside for a while, then go back at it with new eyes. Ask yourself if you can take action to address any of your worries. If you can, add those tasks to a to-do list.
- Next, look at those unproductive worries that are left. What do you need to accept to overcome them? You might need to accept a degree of uncertainty or your own limitations.
- Practice discomfort. Many worriers feel like they can’t tolerate discomfort, so start desensitizing yourself to it in small doses. Try something new, go to a social event you wouldn’t normally go to, accept that public speaking invitation. A lot of times, worrying is a coping strategy, but realizing that you can tolerate discomfort means you’ll need that coping mechanism less.
- Take a breath. Worries often feel urgent, like if we don’t address them somehow right away, there will be disastrous consequences! Ask yourself if that’s really true. If it’s not, press the snooze button on that worry — even if it’s just for a few hours. Promise yourself you can think about it later. Then increase the time you “snooze” it a little more each time.
Once you discover what you’re worrying about — and more importantly, what that worry is a coping mechanism to avoid — you can consciously and mindfully break through to the other side.
