If you have been reading these posts since the start of the year, you know that we are focusing on the five strategies that help determine how successful you are going to be with your wealth building focus. Just to refresh your memory, the five strategic areas are:
1 – Engagement
2 – Governance/Accountability
3 – Model/Goal
4 – Execution/Implementation
5 – Environment/Self Management
You can get the overview of all 5 here, but today we will focus on your environment and self management.

Many financial goals take time. Life happens and suddenly it’s been years since you actually assessed where things stand. Adaptability and support are key to making sure that you continue to refine your goals as you go, shift direction or revise goals to fit new life realities.
Some questions you might want to ask yourself, to assess where your self management skills are:
- To what extent do you perceive yourself as having ownership over your financial success?
- How committed are you to self managing your actions for financial success?
- To what extent do you need to engage other stakeholders in the process?
- Does there exist a mechanism to help adapt to new data?
- What is your ability to regroup as you get off track?
The best way to manage self management is to BOOK TIME to self assess. It doesn’t have to be every week, but some of my favorite clients used to do a “standing” money date, 30 minutes before Game of Thrones started. At first they used it to review Mint and talk about spending, but as they mastered that, it became more of a way to think bigger, look ahead and think about how they wanted to use their resources. They used habit-pairing (do something new with something you already do regularly) to make sure they managed themselves regularly.
And BTW, we can help with some ideas, wherever your challenge might be.
